LE BEAU ET LE BIZARRE

Pour Alain Fouray, qui a grandi à Rouen, le museum d’histoire naturelle est ce lieu de mémoire où, enfant, il déambulait à la découverte émerveillée des beautés de la nature.
De retour sur place, le photographe a marqué le pas devant l’extraordinaire collection d’oiseaux naturalisés que recèle l’institution normande. Les images qu’il en a tirées sont fortes tout à la fois d’une présence objective et d’un paraître indicible. Face à ses oeuvres, le regard est immédiatement attiré par ce qu’elles offrent à voir d’une image surprenante, voire déroutante, qui nous semble familière mais qui n’en est pas moins étrange. La façon qu’il a choisi de cadrer chacun de ses modèles par un plan resserré sur leur corps, sans rien laisser voir ni de leur tête, ni de leurs pattes les verse à l’ordre d’une énigme. Le regardeur est totalement pris par l’incroyable richesse chromatique et matérielle, la beauté incongrue de ces images. « Le beau est toujours bizarre », affirmait jadis Charles Baudelaire.

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE BIZARRE

For Alain Fouray, who grew up in Rouen, the natural history museum is this place of memory where, as a child, he wandered to discover in wonder the beauties of nature.
Back on site, the photographer marked time in front of the extraordinary collection of stuffed birds that the Normandy institution contains. The images he took from it are strong both in an objective presence and an indescribable appearance. Faced with his works, the eye is immediately drawn to what they offer to see of a surprising, even disconcerting image, which seems familiar to us but is no less strange. The way he chose to frame each of his models by a close-up on their body, without letting anything be seen of their head or their legs, turns them into an enigma. The viewer is totally taken by the incredible chromatic and material richness, the incongruous beauty of these images. “Beauty is always bizarre,” Charles Baudelaire once said.
